The win gave the defending Class AAA state champion Stars (8-2, 5-1 7-AAA) two out of three against their rival Patriots (3-4, 1-2).

Siegel junior and Louisville commitment Drew Benefield got the scoring started in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run. Zach Bondurant added a two-run double and Matt McCurry a two-run single to help pad the hosts to a 6-0 advantage.

Oakland wasn't finished, however, scratching across three unearned runs in the top of the fifth and one in the sixth.

However, Siegel reliever Seth Petry closed the door on the Patriots, striking out all four batters he faced to earn the save.

"We've got to field the ball better," said Siegel coach Craig Reavis, whose squad committed nine errors in the series, all in the first and third contests.

Carson Simmons allowed four hits and three runs (all unearned) in four innings for Siegel. Luke Vinson allowed five hits and no walks, striking out four for Oakland in four innings. He allowed all six runs, but just one was earned.

The two teams combined for nine errors.

Benefield finished 2-for-3 while Ryker Kristinus doubled. Jackson Cauthen had two hits for Oakland.

La Vergne 5, Smyrna 3: The Wolverines completed a three-game sweep over their rivals with another strong pitching performance.
