High school roundup: Blackman baseball takes first in series over Siegel

Blackman scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead and held on to defeat Siegel 6-5 Tuesday in the first of a three-game 7-AAA baseball series between the two teams.

The Blaze (3-1 7-AAA) scored three unearned runs in the top of the first to take the early lead but Siegel (5-2 7-AAA) scored two in the bottom of the frame. The game was a back-and-forth contest from that point.

Baseball

Blackman took a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the fifth but the Stars gained the advantage with two in the bottom of the frame.

Justin Etling earned the win in relief for Blackman while Derick Junker earned the save. Seth Petry took the loss for Siegel.

D.J. Wright, Peyton Milam, Michael Dimartino and Zavien Lindsey each drove in a run for Blackman.

Zac Pearson had two hits, including a homer for Siegel. Drew Benefield had two hits and scored twice for the Stars.

The two play a doubleheader at Blackman Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m.

In other 7-AAA action Tuesday, Oakland improved to 2-2 in 7-AAA play with a 1-0 win over La Vergne. Stewarts Creek raised its league mark to 3-4 with a 5-0 win over rival Smyrna.

Riverdale won a pair of shutouts (9-0 over Shawnee, Ohio and 1-0 over Glenbrook, Ill.) in the Warrior Spring Classic.

Central Magnet sweeps DeKalb: Central Magnet took a doubleheader over DeKalb County in 8-AA play Tuesday, winning 3-1 and 8-0.

James Touchton (3-0) struck out nine in the first game while Dylan Jenkins and Parker Phillips had big two-out hits for the Tigers (4-0, 9-3).

Chris Johnson earned the shutout win in the second game, striking out seven. C.J. Campbell was 4-for-4 while Jenkins and Hunter Jones each had two hits for Central Magnet.

MTCS 8, Fayetteville 0: Jared Smith fired a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 10 for the Cougars (6-0, 3-0 9-A).

Josh Letzler was 2-for-4 with a triple and RBI, Zach Stephens had a hit and three RBIs and Parker Bates had a hit and an RBI for MTCS.

Softball

Central Magnet 7, Smith Co. 0: Kali Penny earned the shutout win, striking out six for the Lady Tigers (3-0 8-AA, 8-6 overall).

Penny, Megan Kirkland, Alyssa Ward and Addie Baird each had two hits for Central Magnet.

Soccer

DCA 7, Providence Christian 2: The Lions were playing their first TSSAA match but came up on the losing end.

Alex Rogers and David Lukasick both scored goals for PCA while Rogers and Cade Caughron had assists.
