Gallatin boys, Hendersonville girls win Sumner County Championship track titles

Chris Brooks
USA TODAY NETWORK – Tennessee
Gallatin' boys won the Sumner County Track and Field Championship meet, defeating second-place Beech by 42.5 points.

For the first 14 years, Hendersonville had not managed to win a team track and field title at the Sumner County Championships.

That changed Thursday evening as the Lady Commandos broke through to win their first title by 14 points over Station Camp and by 17 over Gallatin. Defending champion Beech finished fourth.

The title came down to the last race, the 4x400-meter relay, and as long as the Lady Commandos didn’t finish last or get disqualified, Hendersonville was assured of the championship.

Anchored by junior Brooke Long, who won Most Valuable Athlete honors by 0.5 points over White House senior Payton Barlow, Hendersonville won the final event.

Hendersonville' girls won the Sumner County Championship for the first time, defeating Station Camp by 14 points.

Barlow swept the sprint distances for the second consecutive year, but her 4x200-meter relay team finished second, putting Long in position to win the meet’s top honor.

“I knew (Barlow) was up there, and I knew we were competing for it,” Long said. “Her relay got second and I knew our relay had to come out (and win). And we have a group of young girls, so I was trying to get them to push.”

Long won all four of her events, setting a new meet record in the 300-meter hurdles, an event she would have won easily last year despite falling twice had she not hit a hurdle in another lane.

“On the very last hurdle, I was just thinking ‘get over it,’ so I stuttered a couple of steps, but I just knew I didn’t want to fall again,” Long said.

Gallatin’s boys, having finished second the past two years, took out their frustrations on the rest of the field, winning by 42.5 points over second-place Beech.

L-R Gallatin's Jo'Neca Talley and White House's Payton Barlow cross the finish line in a photo finish in the 100-meter dash. Barlow won by 0.02 seconds.

Senior Edrico Briscoe led the Green Wave push, winning the 200- and 400-meter dashes in addition to a long jump victory on Tuesday. Briscoe took home Most Valuable Athlete honors for the second consecutive year.

“It’s very special,” Briscoe said. “I’ve been working hard and my coach has been pushing me hard. It feels great. It felt good knowing the team was going to come in first.”

The meet was held on Hendersonville High School’s recently renovated track surface, which drew favorable reviews.

“It’s a blessing,” Briscoe said. “I want to thank everybody that put in to (resurfacing) the track.”

Hendersonville became just the fourth team to win a team title at the meet – sponsored by the Gallatin News Examiner, Sonic and Wilson Bank and Trust. Gallatin, Beech and Station Camp had won all of the previous titles prior to Thursday.
