High school roundup: Riverdale softball avenges loss to Oakland; Blackman, Riverdale win 7-AAA baseball battles

Riverdale's softball team scored four runs in the second and the lead held up in a 6-4 win over Oakland in a 7-AAA battle Wednesday at Oakland.

Riverdale avenged a loss to rival Oakland a week ago with a 6-4 win Wednesday.

The game was a make-up of a Monday contest that was rained out.

The Lady Warriors (12-10-1, 4-4 7-AAA) avenged an 11-9 loss a week ago to the Lady Patriots (15-8, 5-3 7-AAA).

Oakland will battle Blackman Thursday at home at 6:30. Riverdale will take on Smyrna at home at 6:30 Thursday.

BASEBALL

Blackman 7, Smyrna 4: The 7-AAA frontrunners (18-7, 11-2 7-AAA) jumped out to a 7-1 lead and cruised to another league victory Wednesday.

Zavien Lindsey's RBI-double in the second inning broke a 1-1 tie for Blackman.

Jacob Jones earned the win for the Blaze, scattering five hits in 4.1 innings. Mateo Lozano earned the save.

Lindsey had two hits to lead Blackman while Michael Dimartino had a hit and two RBIS. Dayton Sanders had two RBIs to lead Smyrna.

Riverdale 4, Oakland 3: The Warriors secured a series win, thanks to the relief work of Matt Henning.

Henning tossed 5.2 innings, allowing a run on three hits with four strikeouts.

Riverdale (16-9-2, 9-5 7-AAA) scored two runs in each the first and second innings and never looked back, despite collecting just two hits.

Peyton Henderson and Justin St. Amour had the two Riverdale hits.

Siegel, Brentwood split: Siegel split a twinbill with Brentwood Wednesday, losing the first game 5-3 but winning the second 5-2.

The Stars (14-12) were led by Drew Benefield in the first game. He homered and drove home a run. MTSU commitment Zac Pearson allowed no hits and just one earned run in four innings, but walked four.

The second game went better for Siegel as Carson Simmons earned the win, allowing no earned runs in four innings.

Pearson had two hits, including a double, and drove home two runs in the win.

Central Magnet sweeps Cannon Co.: Central Magnet's baseball team swept a twinbill (13-3, 11-1) from Cannon County in 8-AA play Wednesday.

The Tigers improved to 18-8 overall and 10-0 in league play.

Trey Campbell (4-1) got the win in game one as Dylan Jenkins, C.J. Campbell, Hunter Jones and Tyler Hogue all had two hits to pace CMS. Parker Phillips had the big blast, belting a three-run homer.

Wes Duffield (1-0) earned the win in game two, striking out nine. Campbell and James Touchton had two hits each for the Tigers.

MTCS 3, Huntland 0: The Cougars secured a series win with Wednesday's shutout.

Jared Smith (3-2) scattered three hits in the complete game, striking out two. Ben Durham was 2-for-3 with a run while Wilson Lovinski was 1-for-2 with an RBI for MTCS (11-10, 6-4 9-A).
