Ensworth running back Corn Elder is surrounded by classmates Peter Spruill, Hutt Cooke, Michael Buttarazzi and Jack Nesbitt, who wear corn cob-shaped hats to show their support for Elder during football games in 2012.

Two former Ensworth standouts, Miami cornerback Corn Elder and UCLA offensive lineman Conor McDermott, were drafted on Saturday.

Elder went in the fifth round (152nd overall pick) to the Carolina Panthers. McDermott, a 6-foot-8, 307-pounder, was selected by the Patriots in the sixth round.

The Panthers found a funny way of celebrating their pick of Elder, whose given name is Cornelius. They used every available character on Twitter for 140 corn emojis.

Elder plays a physical style despite his 5-10, 183-pound frame, and NFL scouts love his competitive nature. His lack of size likely will limit his role in many NFL teams’ eyes, but his skills are hard to ignore.

McDermott, a former Mr. Basketball at Ensworth, has tremendous athleticism, but he must improve his strength to put together a lengthy NFL career.

TSU signings: Tennessee state cornerback Ezra Robinson, a transfer from Michigan State, signed an undrafted free agent contract with Jacksonville.

Robinson, 6-1, 180, had five interceptions and broke up eight passes as a senior. He made the All-Ohio Valley Conference first team and played in the Senior Bowl.

Offensive lineman Jessamen Dunker signed an undrafted free agent contract with the New York Giants.

Dunker is a 6-foot-5, 318-pound transfer from Florida who started all four years at TSU, made the All-OVC first team and played in the Senior Bowl this past season.

Quarterback Ronald Butler (Seahawks) and offensive lineman Kevin Kenton (Jets) accepted minicamp invitations after the draft concluded.
