Meet the Commercial Appeal all-metro wrestling team

Meet the semifinalists for The Commercial Appeal's wrestler of the year.

The winners will be announced the inaugural Commercial Appeal Sports Awards at the Opheum on June 9.

The semifinalists and their two guests are invited to attend the ESPY-type awards show for free. Tickets are on sale for the event are also available for $31.50 at sportsawards.commercialappeal.com.

More than 100 Memphis-area athletes and coaches will be honored at the event, which will also feature guest speaker Archie Manning.

Tommy Brackett, CBHS, junior

Tommy Brackett, CBHS

Also a talented Greco-Roman competitor, Brackett finished second in the Division 2 West Region at 195 before going on to place second at state. He finished the year with a 32-7 mark and is a three-time all-metro performer.

Trevor Brown, CBHS, senior 

Trevor Brown, CBHS

Brown, who will continue his career at West Virginia, was the only Shelby County wrestler to win a state title in 2017. He captured the Division 2 title at 138 to finish the season 39-4. He also placed fourth at the high school nationals and was last year’s Best of the Preps winner.

Eric Hodge, CBHS, junior 

Eric Hodge, CBHS

Won the Division 2 West region title at 160 (moving up from 152 earlier in the year) before taking second place at the state meet. Hodge finished the season with a record of 25-11.

Dawson Johnson, Bartlett, senior

Dawson Johnson, Bartlett

The Panthers’ standout compiled a fine 42-7 record en route to winning the Region 7-AAA championship at 195 before going on to a fourth-place finish at the state tournament.

Aaron Moore, Arlington, senior 

Aaron Moore, Arlington

Moore won the 7-AAA region championship at 182 before going on to place third at state. His efforts helped Arlington win another region title and the Tigers went on to finish ninth at the state individual meet.

Drew Nicholson, CBHS, senior

Drew Nicholson, CBHS

Nicholson was having a stellar season before an elbow injury caused him to miss the regionals and state. Nevertheless, he dominated the competition at 160 (finishing 40-1) to land a spot on the all-metro team for the third straight year.

Andrew Sweatt, CBHS, senior

Andrew Sweatt, CBHS

Another strong CBHS performer, Sweatt helped his team win region titles in both duals and individuals while compiling a 27-12 record at 182. He won the region title and placed third at state.

Grayson Walthall, CBHS, junior

Grayson Walthall, CBHS

Walthall captured the region championship at 220 before finishing second at the Division 2 meet, one of four runner-up finishes for the Brothers. He compiled a 30-5 record for the season.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Chris Lewis, CBHS: In his final season with the Brothers, Lewis did a terrific job with a young team, producing one Division 2 state champion and four runners-up. CBHS finished third in both the state duals and state individual meets.
