Spring Fling: What to know this week

The first full day of Spring Fling kicks off Tuesday with baseball, boys soccer, softball, tennis and track and field all in action.

Here is a statewide look at what to know about the OIympic-style festival held throughout Rutherford County and at Wilson Central High School.

Players to watch

BASEBALL

Ben Brooks, Pope John Paul II, Sr.: Memphis signee and Division II-AA Mr. Baseball finalist is hitting .419 with 10 doubles and 11 stolen bases.

Philip Clarke, CPA, Sr.: Vanderbilt signee and Class AA Mr. Baseball finalist hit .500 with 22 RBIs and six homers during the regular season.

Evan Gilliam, Lexington, Sr.: Tennessee signee is hitting better than .500.

Spencer Strider, CAK, Sr.: Clemson signee is also a Class AA Mr. Baseball finalist.

Ryan Weathers, Loretto, Jr.: Vanderbilt commitment and Class A Mr. Baseball finalist went 6-0 with a 0.17 ERA and 90 strikeouts during the regular season.

SOFTBALL

Sierra Hucklebee, Gibbs, Jr.: Hucklebee is hitting .506 with 63 RBIs and six home runs.

Sam King, Forrest, Sr.: King is hitting .426 with 38 RBIs and nine home runs while posting a 32-2 record with a 0.44 ERA and 139 strikeouts.

Caitlin Mitchell, Scotts Hill, Jr.: Mitchell has 15 home runs this season.

Gracie Osbron, Henry County, Jr.: Tennessee commitment is hitting .506 with 32 RBIs, 15 doubles and 10 homers.

Katie Turner, McNairy Central, Jr.: Turner has a 0.50 ERA with 352 strikeouts.

SOCCER

John Armbruster, Father Ryan, Sr.: Louisville signee is a four-year starter.

Rodrigo Atilano, North Side, Jr.: Has scored a team-leading 46 goals this season.

Ryan Lombardo, Cookeville, Sr.: School’s all-time leading scorer has 33 goals and nine assists.

Tyler Jessen, Station Camp, So.: Has scored a team-leading 29 goals and provided 10 assists for the district and region champion Bison.

Joseph Malloy, Franklin, Sr.: Two-time District 11-AAA Defensive MVP anchors a defense that has allowed just three goals this postseason.

BOYS TENNIS

Sam Fischer, Brentwood, Sr.: Four-star Alabama signee is looking for his second consecutive Class AAA singles title.

George Harwell, MBA, Sr.: Four-star Vanderbilt signee is gunning for his third straight Division II-AA singles championship.

GIRLS TENNIS

Drew Hawkins, Baylor, Sr.: Four-star Belmont signee is looking to win her second straight Division II-AA singles title.

Somer Henry, Brentwood, Jr.: Indiana commitment has compiled a 36-0 career record with a pair of Class AAA singles titles in her high school career.

BOYS TRACK

Calvin Austin III, Harding Academy, Sr.: Top qualifier in the Division II-AA 100-meter (10.55), 200-meter (21.25) and 400-meter (48.35) dashes is looking to defend his crown in all three events.

Rodney Castille, Liberty Tech, Sr.: He’s the defending state champion in the 300-meter hurdles and the anchor on two relay teams.

Rashad Haynes, Memphis Central, Sr.: Mercer football signee qualified first in Class AAA 100-meter dash (10.47), second in 200-meter dash (21.68) and fourth in long jump (22-9.5).

Jett Kinder, Brentwood, Fr.: Top Class AAA qualifier in pole vault (14-6); third in both triple jump (44-6) and high jump (6-2).

GIRLS TRACK

Teauna Anderson, Northeast, Sr.: Top qualifier in the Class AAA 100-meter dash (12.11).

Tyra Gittens, Ensworth, Sr.: Texas A&M signee could add four more Division II-AA state titles – long jump, high jump, 100-meter hurdles and 200-yard dash – to an already stellar high school career.

Kethlin Campbell, Shelbyville, Sr.: Top Class AAA qualifier in the long jump (19-8.5), 100-meter dash (11.78) and 200-meter dash (23.88).

Kiara Rhodes, Whitehaven, Sr.: Top qualifier in the Class AAA 100-meter hurdles (13.82) will also contend for titles in the 300-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump.

Teams to watch

CAK softball: The defending Class AA champions cruised back to the state tournament this season. The Lady Warriors are led by a pair of dominant pitchers in seniors Allison Zimmerman and Lexi Harmon.

CPA soccer: The Lions have played in three straight Class A/AA championship matches. They could get a rematch in the final with CAK, which beat CPA in last year's final.

Houston soccer: David Wolff’s squad boasts a dynamic midfield with Collin Scott and Sebastian Musicante along with great attacking talent up front. The Mustangs have allowed just seven goals all year.

The Kings Academy softball: In just their fourth year as a program, the Lady Lions are looking for their third consecutive state championship appearance and are also trying to repeat as Division II-A champions

Pope John Paul II baseball. The Knights, led by Division I signees Mason Hickman (Vanderbilt) and Ben Brooks (Memphis), are looking for their first title in three straight trips to the Division II-AA tournament.
