May 24, 2017 - Evangelical Christian School players rush to the field to celebrate their win after defeating the University School of Jackson 3-2 in the 2017 TSSAA Division II Class A State Baseball Tournament at La Vergne High School in Smyrna, TN on Wednesday afternoon.

Here's a look at how Memphis-area teams and individuals fared on the first full day of Spring Fling Wednesday in Murfreesboro, along with a look ahead to Thursday's top action.

Wednesday's MVPs

Spring Fling volunteers: Wednesday began with a heavy downpour, leaving the day's activities in serious jeopardy. But the many volunteers at all the venues made sure all the fields and courts were playable and all of Wednesday's activities were concluded, albeit behind schedule.

Other standouts

Hunter Childress, ECS baseball: After University School of Jackson had scored two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 2-1 lead, Childress — batting ninth in the order — delivered the biggest RBI of the year for the Eagles as he drove in the winning run in a 3-2 win.

Logan Eskin, Houston soccer: Eskin scored two first-half goals as the Mustangs overcame playing more than half the game with 10 men to defeat Cookeville, 3-1, in the Class AAA semis. Houston takes on Station Camp for the title on Friday.

Hugh Fisher, Briarcrest baseball: With his team's season on the line, Fisher came through with a gem, holding Pope John Paul II to two hits while striking out nine in 6.2 innings in a 1-0 victory. The Saints took on McCallie in a late Wednesday game.

Rosie Robinson, St. Benedict softball: Robinson pitched a complete-game four-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Eagles kept their season alive with a 3-0 victory over Briarcrest in DII-AA. They will face either Baylor or GPS at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Thursday's best bets

Lausanne and St. George's will face off for the DII-A soccer championship at 1 p.m. at the Siegel Soccer Park Stadium. The match-up will be the only title game at the Fling featuring two Memphis teams.

ECS will play USJ again for the DII-A baseball title beginning at 10 a.m. at MTSU's Floyd Stadium. The Eagles are undefeated in the double-elimination tournament so if USJ wins, there will be an 'if necessary" game later in the day.

Whitehaven goes after its third straight Class AAA championship and several Shelby County individuals will also be in the title mix as the girls track meet takes place at Dean A. Hayes Stadium.

Individual and doubles competition in all divisions gets underway at the Old Fort Tennis Center.
