Brentwood Academy's Gavin Schoenwald on Thursday committed to play football at Vanderbilt.

Where exactly the 6-foot-5, 225-pound athlete will line up for the Commodores, however, remains a mystery.

“Two years ago I would have been the classic, ‘I’m a quarterback. I’m a quarterback all the way,’ but I’m not like that anymore,” said Schoenwald, who, in addition to playing tight end and receiver also has backed up former Eagles quarterback Jeremiah Oatsvall for the past two seasons. “After getting a year of tight end under my belt, I’ve come to really enjoy the position."

Last season, Schoenwald ranked second on his team in catches (34), fourth in yards receiving (329) and third in touchdown receptions (4), helping lead Brentwood Academy to a second consecutive Division II-AA state title.

He also has thrown for 723 yards and nine scores in two seasons.

“I actually don’t have a preference, to be honest with you,” said Schoenwald, also a key contributor for the three-time defending state champion Brentwood Academy basketball team. “If it’s tight end, great. If it’s quarterback, awesome."

“I’m not going to close any doors. They’re all open."

As a sophomore, Schoenwald hauled in 13 receptions for 128 yards and a score.

Schoenwald, a three-star prospect and the state’s 16th-ranked prospect according to 247Sports, had narrowed his list of finalists down to three schools — Ole Miss, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

“I think there were a lot of knowns (at Vanderbilt),” Schoenwald said. “I love the area. I love the city. And I know I’m going to be happy at Vandy regardless. I think there was the possibility of me being happier at Ole Miss or South Carolina, but then again, it’s just a possibility. I went with the known.”

Schoenwald is one of three Brentwood Academy seniors expected to sign with major Division I programs in February, joining four-star Washington linebacker commitment Jackson Sirmon and uncommitted four-star wide receiver Camron Johnson.

Schoenwald was Vanderbilt’s second commitment in as many days. On Wednesday, Ben Bresnahan, a tight end from West Forsyth High in Cumming, Ga., committed to the Commodores.

Bresnahan, a 6-foot-5, 225-pounder is a three-star prospect. He chose Vanderbilt over about 25 schools, including SEC members Kentucky, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Tennessee, according to 247Sports.

As a junior last season, Bresnahan had 57 receptions for 764 yards and seven touchdowns. Vanderbilt now has six committed players in the 2018 recruiting class.
