Injuries aside, Northeast's Anderson captures All Area award

If the end of the high school track and field season didn't end the way Northeast High's Teauna Anderson wanted, it wasn't because of a lack of effort.

Anderson never truly felt 100 percent this year. After having injured both her quad muscles and dealing with foot pain that arrived as a result of those quad issues, Anderson -- a sprinter -- had to just deal with it.

If only she had been 100 percent healthy.

Northeast track star Teauna Anderson is the next in a long line of Lady Eagles track stars who have won All Area Female Athlete of the Year.

During the course of her senior year, Anderson dominated much of the sprint races in Montgomery County and earned state qualifying berths in the 100 and 200 meter races as well as a member of the 4x100 and 4x200 relay squads.

For her efforts this season, Anderson was named The Leaf-Chronicle All Area Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year. The award is voted on by the newspaper's sports staff while the All Area girls and boys Track and Field Teams are selected by the area athletic directors.

"I never really told many people about my injuries because I knew that if I did, I wouldn't get a chance to run and that would make me very unhappy," Anderson said. "I could be grouchy if I wasn't competing."

Northeast track star Teauna Anderson (center) runs against the competition in the sub-section meet last month at West Creek High. Anderson was named the All Area Female Athlete of the Year.

But the injuries rarely slowed Anderson down. She earned person best times in the 100 (12.1 seconds) and the 200 (25.0) this season.

"And I won the Great 8 in both events," Anderson said. "I'm proud of those wins because at the start of the season It was up in the air on whether I wanted to compete in track this season. I love competing but I knew I wasn't all the way healthy."

Anderson had a hiccup in the sub-sectional, losing to West Creek's Asha Jennings but responded in the sectional for the 100 title, getting past teammate Clandra Henry. At state, Anderson struggled to an 11th place finish in the 100 but did medal in the 200 with eighth place.

"Of course I would have loved to do better at state," Anderson said. "But my season ended how it was supposed to in terms of where God has me in my life right now. So now I'm focused on getting healthy, getting stronger and being ready for next spring."

Next spring includes Anderson running for Tennessee Tech.
