Tennessean All-Midstate Boys Soccer Team
Middle Tennessee's top high school athletes were honored during The Tennessean Sports Awards on June 6 at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.
Players of the year and some special awards were presented, and Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota was the featured guest speaker.
Here is The Tennessean's All-Midstate boys soccer team.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
MICHAEL JONES, Grace Christian, Sr.
Position: Forward
Why chosen: The Trevecca signee had 68 goals and 22 assists, leading the Lions to a program-best 16-2-1 record and their first District 11-A/AA tournament title. Jones finished with 152 goals and 52 assists in his three seasons.
FIRST TEAM
RYAN LOMBARDO, Cookeville, Sr.
Position: Forward
Why chosen: The District 6-AAA MVP and the school’s all-time leading scorer had 33 goals and 10 assists for the Class AAA semifinalist Cavaliers.
CHASE FREEMAN, Station Camp, Sr.
Position: Forward
Why chosen: The Wagner basketball signee scored 19 goals and had 13 assists for the Class AAA state champions.
JOHN ARMBRUSTER, Father Ryan, Sr.
Position: Midfielder
Why chosen: The Louisville signee helped lead the Irish to a second consecutive Division II-AA semifinal appearance. He was a finalist for The Tennessean’s Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
BLAKE SAMS, Ravenwood, Sr.
Position: Midfielder
Why chosen: The North Florida signee and league MVP was among the leading scorers for the District 11-AAA champion Raptors. He was a finalist for The Tennessean’s Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
ELLIS MOORE, Montgomery Bell Academy, Sr.
Position: Midfielder
Why chosen: Moore tallied eight goals and five assists while helping lead the Big Red to a third straight Division II-AA championship game appearance. He was a finalist for The Tennessean’s Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
OWEN KECK, Christ Presbyterian Academy, Sr.
Position: Midfielder
Why chosen: The Lee signee and Class A/AA all-state selection scored 10 goals and provided seven assists for the state semifinalist Lions.
JOSEPH MALLOY, Franklin, Sr.
Position: Defender
Why chosen: The District 11-AAA Defensive MVP led a Rebels defense that posted six shutouts and allowed fewer than one goal per contest. He was a finalist for The Tennessean’s Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
WILLIAM PORTER, Montgomery Bell Academy, Sr.
Position: Defender
Why chosen: Porter anchored a Big Red defense that posted 10 shutouts and surrendered just seven goals en route to a third straight Division II-AA title match.
HENRY SANDERS, Battle Ground Academy, Sr.
Position: Defender
Why chosen: The Birmingham Southern signee was a key part to the Wildcats’ defense, which allowed 13 goals.
GARRETT BEAM, Christ Presbyterian Academy, Jr.
Position: Goalkeeper
Why chosen: The District 12-A/AA tournament MVP boasted a 0.40 goals-against average with 14 shutouts for the state semifinalist Lions.

Why chosen: Morand, the coach since Station Camp opened, led the Bison to a 22-0-2 record and the Class AAA title – the first team state championship in the school’s 15-year history. The Bison knocked off nationally ranked and previously unbeaten Houston 1-0 in the title match.
