PrepXtra girls track team announced
West High School’s girls are once again a player at the state Class AAA track and field meet.
Loaded with young talent, the Lady Rebels placed third at the state meet in Murfreesboro in May behind Whitehaven and Brentwood.
“It was our best finish since we won back-to-back state titles in 2010 and 2011,” said West’s Will Jay, the PrepXtra Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year.
West looks like it may stay atop the leader board for a while.
An infusion of young talent the last two seasons has helped rejuvenate the program.
Sophomore Caroline Lewis and a bevy of freshmen like Patience Sakeuh, Madeline Shook, Hannah Burkhart and Janie Holecek were big contributors for West this season.
The future indeed looks bright for West.
The Lady Rebels’ state champion 4x800 relay team included one senior and three freshmen. West’s 4x400 team, which finished second in the state, featured one sophomore and three freshmen.
Headlining the News Sentinel’s PrepXtra Girls Track and Field Team is CAK's Rebecca Story, who was named the News Sentinel Sports Awards Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
For the second year in a row, Story won the 1600 meters (5 minutes, 6.57 seconds), 800 (2:16.64) and 3200 (10:53.33) at the state Class A/AA meet in May in Murfreesboro. She had the fastest time in the state in all three events this season.
On June 10 at the Music City Distance Carnival at Vanderbilt, Story broke the 40-year Tennessee state record in the 1600 with a time of 4:43.97.
