JACKSON – University School of Jackson kicker Charles Campbell is going to be a Hoosier.

The Bruins’ kicker was offered a scholarship on Sunday afternoon, and he announced his commitment Sunday evening.

“Indiana is a great place, and I want to go there,” said Campbell, whose offer from Indiana was his third after receiving offers from Army and Navy. “The town of Bloomington isn’t one that a lot of people around here have been to, so I tell them it’s a lot like Oxford, Miss., where Ole Miss is.

“It’s just a nice town that happens to have a big time college in it.”

Campbell said there’s a faith element to the coaching staff that’s a big draw for him as well.

“I’m a Christian, and (Indiana head coach Tom Allen) said he is too,” Campbell said. “I talked to him when I went to their camp in early June, and he told me he had a few kickers he was looking at and that he needed time to pray before he decided which one he felt led to make an offer to.

“Knowing that was part of his process in decided who got the offer makes me that much more grateful to receive an offer from them.”

USJ kicker Charles Campbell punts the ball during last week's game vs. Friendship Christian. Special teams could come into play this week after the close win USJ had over BGA in the regular season.

Campbell has been in talks with Indiana since December, and his visit to Bloomington was his first time to talk with them in person.

“They’ve seemed to have been honest with me every time they’ve talked to me, and I appreciate that,” Campbell said. “I really appreciate the scholarship offer too.”
