JACKSON – Adamsville’s offensive line won the lineman challenge at the first night of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes 7-on-7 camp Tuesday night at Trinity Christian Academy.

The lineman challenge is a yearly event that has some of the typical events like power lifting competition among the participating teams. But there are other non-conventional events as well.

There’s a bubble competition in which a lineman from four schools will get inside a large plastic bubble, and the four will compete at trying to knock each other out of a square area. It’s like a fun American version of sumo wrestling.

Adamsville's Juston Hilton receives encouragement from his teammates during one of the linemen contests at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' summer football camp, Tuesday, July 18.

They also go through an inflatable bounce house obstacle course relay. While this event may sound simple and safe enough, linemen need to be careful because a player from South Side actually broke his arm in this event.

“We’re just looking for different ways to make things fun for the linemen when they come to this,” said local FCA coordinator Barry Cox during a recent interview about the event. “The guys have fun, and it’s definitely something different to let them compete leading up to the season.”

Adamsville's Tristan Coleman goes through an inflatable obstacle course during the Fellowship of Christian Athelete's summer football camp, Tuesday, July 18.

Adamsville’s line is projected to be slightly younger this year after a number of players graduated last year, but the fact they were able to do so well in this competition shows there’s a level of athleticism to the group they can build on.

Haywood continues to shine

Three days after finishing second to Cordova at the UT Martin 7-on-7, Haywood edged Obion County in the 7-on-7 competition.

A total of 12 teams competed in four rounds of games, and the team that scored the most points in all four games earned the championship. Haywood was that team.

The Tomcats have nearly all their skill players back from last year, and most of the guys this year will be back next year too.

Dresden coach doing well

Dresden assistant coach Kenneth Irvine had a health scare when he passed out during the competition Tuesday evening.

The start of the camp had been delayed when the heat index was at 105 degrees at 4:30 p.m. when it was supposed to start, and it had begun to drop.

But temperatures were still high during the work.

Irvine passed out and was taken to Jackson General Hospital, where he stayed overnight for observation. Dresden head coach Levi Estes said Irvine was doing well and was expected to go home Wednesday afternoon.
