When the 2018 season rolls around, the Lady Warriors softball team will be under new management.
Happy Valley will be led by former Milligan and Happy Valley baseball player Cody Hyder who will be taking over for Bonnie Peters who will not be returning as head coach this season.
After graduating from Happy Valley where he was a student-athlete, Hyder played baseball for the Milligan Buffaloes from 2009 to 2014.
From 2014-2016, Hyder did a coaching stint with the FCA Flames baseball squad, a home school team out of the Tri-Cities. Hyder was the head coach for a year before just helping coach the team his second year.
This will be Hyder’s first season coaching softball.
“Softball is a completely different game from baseball due to the faster pace,” said Hyder. “Softball and baseball are alike in that fundamentals play a huge role in the game. You can be way more athletic than the other team and win in football and basketball but that is not the case in softball and baseball.
“I have been around both games enough to know that it is all about fundamentals,” Hyder added.
Happy Valley softball has seen plenty of top talent come through the program the past few years and that is something Hyder is excited about.
“We are going to have the talent this year to compete,” said Hyder. “I am looking forward to it. My goal is to give these girls the best opportunity they can have while they are here to compete at this level while making them fundamentally sound enough to compete at the next level.”
Hyder will also teach social studies at Happy Valley.
