Clarksville High baseball star Skyler Luna is coming off a season in which he was named the District 10-AAA MVP, The Leaf-Chronicle All Area Baseball Player of the Year and a Mr. Baseball finalist.

Luna's latest news has more to do with his future as he will be heading east to Knoxville after committing to play baseball at Tennessee.

Luna, 5-foot-10, 160 pounds, was ranked No. 18 in Tennessee by MaxPreps.com after helping guide Clarksville to the District 10-AAA regular season and tournament championships this past spring.

Clarksville's Skyler Luna draws huge compliment after All Area award

"Some of the Tennessee coaches came into town the weekend of the (travel ball) Clarksville Orioles tournament (in mid-June) and came to our Clarksville High field," Clarksville coach Brian Hetland said. "They were actually there to see some other kids. But I introduced myself and told him about Skyler Luna and (former Northeast High standout) Christian Scott and that these guys are getting ready to take batting practice and play."

Hetland said the Tennessee coaches were already familiar with Luna and Scott and had a chance to watch both during the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association showcase.

"They really liked Skyler's athleticism and the fact that he's versatile," Hetland said. "Skyler can play short, second and third and he'd been to a UT baseball camp two years ago."

Hetland said UT has been a dream school for Luna for the better part of the past six months.

"I know he liked Austin Peay a lot," Hetland added. "Alabama-Birmingham and Belmont were in the picture as well. He was interested in all of them, but I know he liked APSU a lot and appreciated that offer. But I think UT was too much to pass up."

Clarksville High's Skylar Luna guns a throw to first base to record an out against Rossview during their District 10 baseball game Tuesday.

Attempts to reach Luna on Friday were unsuccessful.

A two-sport star, Luna participated in the Riverdale 7-on-7 passing league tournament Thursday and will take part in McCracken County's 7-on-7 in Paducah, Ky., on Saturday.

Luna, a quarterback for the Wildcats, will lead his team against Rossview when the season starts Aug. 18.

He was among three Class AAA Mr. Baseball finalists and was named to the Tennessee Sports Writers Association All-State team.

Clarksville High's Skyler Luna fouls off a pitch from Beech's starter Dalton Hall during their Region 5-AAA tournament semifinal game Monday at CHS.

Luna was a third baseman but could play shortstop and was one of the top hitters in the city of Clarksville. He was named All District, All Region and All Tournament after batting .442. His 53 hits led all players in Montgomery County, and he had 33 RBIs and scored 51 times (a city-best).
