Dickson County has several playmakers that have returned that can contribute both offensively and defensively. Many of these players will be asked to play this coming season on both sides of the ball. Here are five players to keep an eye on throughout the football season.

Conner Stewart, Jr., DB.: Stewart returns to a secondary that, despite losing Caleb Rozar (now at The University of North Carolina), has lots of experience under it’s belt. He’s played in the back unit since he was a freshman, and will be asked to be a vocal leader that also leads by example this coming season. Stewart was the team leader in tackles last year with 81.

“He’s very reliable, having played for us two years in the secondary,” said Dickson County coach Randy Murphree.

“He’s a big hitter and a slobberknocker. We’re relying on him heavily and the energy that he brings.”

Tristan Corlew, Jr., ATH: Corlew’s versitility and athleticism are going to be important for the Cougars both on the offense and defense. He’ll be asked to not only play in the secondary on the outside, but will also be featured as one of the backs in the Cougars’ new triple option offense. Corlew could also see some action on special teams as a return specialist. He had 52 tackles last year from his defensive back position.

“(He’s) an explosive athlete,” said Murphree.

“Very energetic, a good tackler, and he’s going to be a good A-back for us.”

Dean Steely, Sr., DT/OL: Steely is another player whose versitility will come in handy for the Cougars this season. Not only is he a solid offensive lineman, but he’s also a player that can clog up the line of scrimmage and force teams to try and run to the outside edges. Steely is the only returning starter on the defensive line, recording 24 tackles last year.

He’s a load on the inside,” said Murphree.

“He’s something to handle. At the level we’re about to play in, he’ll have to battle.”

Darian Burns, Jr., RB/LB: Burns could be looked upon as the feature back for the Cougars this season who will grind out the tough yards. He had 242 yards on the ground and four rushing touchdowns, but also had 211 receiving yards and a score to add to his total. He’ll also play some linebacker in the middle of the field.

“He can play anywhere,” said Murphree.

"He’ll do what you ask him to do. He always brings positive energy."

Demontez Coleman, Sr., ATH: Last year, Coleman almost eclipsed 1,000 all-purpose yards. He’ll once again be asked to do a little bit of everything both offensively and on special teams. As one of the lone seniors, Coleman is also expected to be one of the voices of the locker room and someone who can help rally the troops when times are tough.

“He’s a great athlete,” said Murphree

“I saw something out of him the other night that really impressed me, and it’s a sign of maturity and buying in. He’s starting to understand the game we’re trying to play.”
