Football offense

Jeremy Banks, Cordova The 6-2, 210-pounder has 16 offers and definitely looked the part of a star running back in the Wolves' 62-32 win over East. Banks ran for 265 yards on just 23 carries and scored three times, including a 70-yarder.

Football defense

Zach Davidson, FACS: Davidson had nine tackles — including four for lost yardage — to help the Crusaders hold off a late Douglass charge and win, 28-24.

Special teams

Greg "Butta" Williams, White Station: The senior provided one of the few bright spots for the Spartans, returning a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown in a 45-21 loss to Briarcrest.

All-purpose

D'Arien Watkins, Oakhaven: Watkins was the star of the Hawks' 18-0 win over Sheffield, catching scoring passes of 6 and 54 yards from Cameron Woodruff while returning an interception 85 yards for the third touchdown. It's the first time since 2010 Oakhaven opened with a victory.

Girls soccer

Cara Young, Houston: Freshman Parker Gelinas (three goals) and sophomore Abby Rushwin (two) provided the scoring punch but it was Young's play in defense that was crucial as Houston opened with four straight victories. A converted forward, Young's tenacity at the back sparked her team to victories over Germantown (6-0), Maryville (1-0), Bearden (5-1) and Hendersonville (4-0).
