Oakland football No. 1, Blackman No. 2 in 6A football poll; Eagleville ranked

There's a battle atop the Associated Press Class 6A state poll, and both teams are from Murfreesboro.

Oakland edged rival Blackman by one point (159-158) to become the new No. 1 team in Class 6A.

Eagleville also earned recognition, debuting at No. 10 in the Class 2A poll.

Oakland (2-0) earned eight first-place votes while Blackman (2-0) garnered seven.

Maryville, which was ranked No. 1 last week, was third, followed by Science Hill and Whitehaven, which were tied for fourth.

Oakland snapped Maryville's 70-game regular-season winning streak Friday, winning 17-14. The Patriots now have won 21 consecutive regular-season games.

The Blaze rolled again, cruising past Rhea County 52-21. The Blaze have scored 115 points in their first two games.

Eagleville has started the season 2-0 after Friday's 31-6 win over Cornersville.

Oakland will have a bye week while Blackman plays at home in a Region 3-6A game against Coffee County on Friday. Eagleville will be at home against Forrest.

Stewarts Creek's girls soccer team won its division at the Smoky Mountain Cup tournament this past weekend.

Big weekend for Lady Red Hawks: Stewarts Creek's girls soccer team captured the Mount Buckley division of the Smoky Mountain Cup tournament over the weekend.

The Lady Red Hawks went 3-0 to win the division. The JV squad also went 3-0 and won its division.

Stewarts Creek won 7-1 over Tennessee High in the first game. Tennessee High went 17-2 and reached the Class AAA state tournament last season. 

The Lady Red Hawks followed with wins over Henry County (5-0) and Cookeville (4-2).

Annie Warner scored five goals and Katie Nyland four goals in the tournament. Dakota Mitchell, Kaitlyn Watson and Morgan Mueller also played well for the Lady Red Hawks.

Stewarts Creek plays at home in a 7-AAA contest against Siegel at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Stars fare well in Kentucky: Siegel's cross country teams had big meets at the Warren East Raider Twilight this past weekend in Bowling Green, Ky.

The boys placed first overall (43 points); Dawson Reed was third (16:20) and Canaan Anderson was seventh (16:41). Senior Luke Cassidy followed at 16:48.

The girls were third overall as Marilyn McCarthy ran in 19:29 (freshman overall winner) and Susan Downing was 11th at 20:45.
