Rainy, windy, slippery, cold and wet are the five things that stand out the most in the Independence 28-23 victory over visiting Centennial for its first win of the season. As far as the game goes here are five things that led to an Eagles victory.

Independence running back Troy Henderson (21) falls on Centennial slot back Tavion Fleming (22) as he is driven out of bounds during the second half of a high school football game Friday, Sept. 1, 2017, in Thompson's Station, Tenn. Independence won 28-23.

Run the football

Independence running back Troy Henderson rushed for a 58-yard touchdown on the Eagles' first possession for a quick 7-0 lead.

The senior rushed for three touchdowns in the first half and finished the game with 144 rushing yards.

Early offense

The Eagles took all the momentum early in the game scoring the games first 21 points as they led 21-0 after the first quarter and 28-16 at the half.

Turnovers

Centennial’s first 16 points of the game came off of three Eagle miscues. The Cougars forced three fumbles and blocked a punt.

The blocked punt gave Centennial its first points of the game as they recovered the ball in the end zone for the touchdown.

Great hands

Junior wide receiver Kendrell Scurry made some impressive catches throughout the game including a 31-yard reception to put the Eagles near the goal line which later led to a Henderson touchdown run.

Scurry had 71 yards receiving for the game.

Defense

Despite not scoring in the second half, Independence defense was able to hold off Centennial.

With four minutes to play and Centennial driving, the Eagles forced a fumble and Sullivan Hunter was able to recover it to stop the drive.

That was the Cougars only turnover on the game, but it was a costly one as the Eagles held on to win 28-23.
