The Creek Wood Red Hawks mounted another second half charge, but the deficit was just too much to overcome this time, falling to Greenbrier 21-14 for their first loss of the season.

Three takeaways from tonight’s 5-4A region game:

Greenbrier can run and they have depth in the backfield:

Micah Escue had a great week last week, and seemed as though he would do the same against Creek Wood. After rushing for 65 yards and a touchdown, Escue went down with an injury. Brandon Chambers took the load from there, and the Bobcats never missed a beat. In fact, Chambers would score twice on the ground carrying more than one Red Hawk each time.

Bobcats dominated the line of scrimmage:

The Bobcats’ front line on both sides of the ball controlled the game.

“It was a tough physical game,” said Greenbrier coach John Elmore.

“We knew even though we were up 21-0 that the game wasn’t over.”

Creek Wood barely moved the ball in the first half due to pressure from the D-line. Red Hawk quarterback Timmy Randolph was sacked three times, and the second half was not much different. The Red Hawks managed only one successful drive for the game, and it was just 35 yards after recovering an onside kick.

The Red Hawks’ special teams turned the tables:

Creek Wood’s resilience was put on display again this week. After going down by 21 at the beginning of the 2nd half, the Red Hawks’ special teams captured the momentum quickly. Garrett Stansberry would return a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and then Creek Wood would recover an onside kick. Sam Askins scored his sixth touchdown of the season on the ensuing drive. Although they couldn’t muster the win, Creek Wood coach Houston Thiel was proud of the fight.

“I like how we came out and responded in the second half. But you can’t put yourself in such a big hole and expect to win football games,” said Thiel.
