Hurricane Harvey: How Tennessee high school football teams are helping Texas recover

The Tennessee Football Coaches Association has reached out to high school football coaches across the state to help raise money for Hurricane Harvey relief in Texas.

Siegel athletics director Greg Wyant, an official with the TnFCA, said a mass email was sent earlier this week asking its members to assist in raising money to be sent to the Texas High School Coaches Association. That association would then pass it along to the Red Cross in Texas.

"We're trying to get all of the teams playing in the state to pass the bucket around," Wyant said.

Wyant said the Tennessee coaches association also plans on making a donation from its funds.

"We felt like we needed to help in some way," Wyant said. "I'm hoping there is a great response.

"I'm hoping everyone across the state will have someone standing at the gate with buckets or pass it around at the game."

Wyant said the Tennessee association has more than 500 members. That includes high school coaches, assistants and middle school coaches.

Wyant believes the state will rally around the cause, just as it has in others.

"I think our state is a very giving state," he said. "You don't have to look any further to what happened with the Gatlinburg fires and the response from people to the community in Gatlinburg.

"When these types of things happen people look for ways to give."
