Central is having some bad luck at quarterback

Sometimes, it's just bad luck and there's nothing you can do about it. Injuries usually fall into that category.

Central is following up its state championship appearance with some awful luck.

Sophomore Dakota Fawver transferred from Carter with expectations of taking over at quarterback from Trey Mitchell. And he did, for two games. Then Fawver hurt his knee in the second game against Fulton and is out for the season.

Carter's Dakota Fawver (8) is tackled by Central's Tyler Davies (50) and Jadarius Sackie (11) during a high school football game at Carter on Friday, Sept. 16, 2016.

Next, sophomore Eli Sharp stepped up. He only had junior varsity experience, but he had been in the program for a year. But Sharp hurt his leg in his first start, Friday's loss to Sevier County, and needs six to eight weeks to recover.

All of a sudden freshman Luke Ferguson is the starting quarterback with only one JV start.

"It's not ideal in any way, shape or form," coach Bryson Rosser said. "But Luke is smart."

The veteran line (the three seniors and two juniors are all returning starters) is working with Ferguson to get the timing down. And Central has some experience at running back.

Rosser doesn't plan on adjusting the system too much but is working with Ferguson to get as many reps as possible. Of course Tuesday's rain storm pushing practice inside didn't help — just a little more bad luck.

The coach does see upside, however; he just has to look long-term. Next year, he'll have three young quarterbacks all with some experience.

Hardin Valley senior headed to Chattanooga

Abbey Cornelius just had a gut feeling. She visited Chattagnooga, met the women's basketball team and it just felt right.

Hardin Valley's Abbey Cornelius, left, and Bearden's Grace Van Rij go after the rebound on Friday at Hardin Valley Academy. Bearden won 57-40.

On Tuesday, Cornelius committed to play for the Mocs next year.

"I was the best fit for me," the 6-foot-2 senior said. "I loved everything about it, the team, the school."

It came down to Chattanooga or Belmont, but the former just felt more comfortable.

Cornelius, who will receive a full athletic scholarship, plays small or power forward for the Hawks, but will play power forward or center for the Mocs. She's not sure about playing center, though feels better knowing the Chattanooga system doesn't call for a true center.
