Alcoa coach Gary Rankin denied 400th win in loss to Maryville

Alcoa football coach Gary Rankin will have to wait another week to become the first Tennessee high school football coach to reach 400 wins.

Maryville defeated Alcoa 28-24 on Friday night, giving first-year coach Derek Hunt his first win in the Blount County rivalry.

Alcoa, the two-time defending Class 3A state champions, led the Class 6A powerhouse 24-21 entering the fourth quarter.

Rankin fell to 399-75 overall.

Rankin, who grew up in Carthage, won four state titles at Riverdale before going to Alcoa in 2006. He's won eight more championships since moving to Blount County.

Ranking became the winningest coach in Tennessee in 2014, surpassing Ken Netherland
