Elizabethton made the plays needed to pick up a big win on Friday night.
The Cyclones jumped out early and then held on for a 35-21 victory over Daniel Boone at Citizens Bank Stadium.
The win moves EHS to 2-1 on the season.
Elizabethton struck early.
The Cyclones saw Tyson Vance nab an interception on the game’s third play. That set-up a Cameron Coleman touchdown from a yard out to give Elizabethton an early 7-0 lead after Kade Hensley’s extra point.
The EHS defense forced a quick defensive stand and Carter Everett and the Elizabethton offense went to work. Everett hit Evan Perkins for a 17-yard touchdown as EHS took a 14-0 lead before the midpoint of the first quarter, and that is how the teams went to the second quarter.
The Cyclones opened the quarter with a quick strike as Everett found Ryan Wetzel for a two-yard pass. After Daniel Boone got on the board with a Charlie Cole touchdown, Everett scored his third touchdown of the night as he hit Wetzel for an eight-yard pass. A late Trailblazer touchdown cut the EHS lead to 28-14 at the half.
Daniel Boone pulled within a possession midway through the third quarter. Neither team was able to capitalize on field position for the rest of the quarter and most of the fourth.
In the closing minutes, the Cyclone defense forced Daniel Boone off the field with a fourth down stand. That set up a Corey Russell touchdown from 39 yards out to ice the game.
Everett finished the game 14-of-18 with 156 yards. Russell added 121 yards on the ground on nine carries.
