Charlie Martin did everything right in Cheatham County’s 13-10 win over Montgomery Central on Friday.

Cheatham County head coach Eric Hatley congratulates Benton Puckett after a touchdown against Creek Wood.

The first-year player  tried out for the team in the summer 'just for fun’ coach Eric Hatley said.

Martin hit a 38-yard and a 28-yard field goal as well as a PAT for seven of the Cubs' 13 points in the win.

“We were trying to figure out his limit,” Hatley said. “We gave him a shot (from 38 yards) and sure enough he could have hit from five or six yards further out.”

Martin also helped the Cubs on defense and saw some reps as a backup running back.

Cheatham County improved to 3-1 with the win. Montgomery Central dropped to 0-4.

“Montgomery Central was better than their record indicated.” Hatley said “The game was closer than people thought it was going to be because they had some guys coming back from injury.”

Luke Barnes threw for 80 yards and rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown in the win.

After shutting out Sycamore in the ‘Powder Keg’ game on Sept. 1, Cheatham County hosts Harpeth in another county rivalry on Friday.

“You have to perform well in our region,” Hatley said. “Yes, it is a county game, but it’s more importantly a regional game. Coach (Doug) Loope will have Harpeth prepared, we have to be ready for anything.”

Sycamore drops second straight

Sycamore's Trevor Gagnon (6) jumps for the reception as a Davidson defender sets up the tackle during Friday's loss to Davidson Academy.

Sycamore could not recover from their week three ‘Powder Keg’ loss, falling to Davidson Academy 37-19.

“We had a very good defensive stop to begin the game,” Sycamore coach Justin Robison said. “Our offensive started to find our identity a little bit.”

With Sycamore only trailing 17-7 at the half, Robison says Davidson Academy’s depth and size helped them pull away in the second half.

“Our offense turned a corner last night for sure,” Robison said. “I’m disappointed we didn’t get the win, but I was very pleased with how well we responded to a tough Davidson Academy team.”

Sycamore dropped to 2-2. Davidson Academy improved to 4-0.

Michael Loosli highlighted the offense for the War Eagles with 126 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The War Eagles play their fourth road game of the season as they travel to Stewart County next week for a regional affair.

“We’re wearing the road uniforms out for sure.” “It’s tough, but I think traveling in the long run will help our guys mature.”
