Summertown girls golf, Kaley Campbell finish third at TSSAA championships
MANCHESTER — The Summertown girls golf team captured a third-place finish at Wednesday’s TSSAA Division I Small Class Girls Golf State Championships at WillowBrook Golf Club.
Freshman Kaley Campbell shot 16-over 160 to finish third in the individual tournament for Summertown, which was returning to the state tournament for the first time since 2007. Sophomore Tori Campbell tied for 21st at 192.
“I’m really excited for what the future holds for (Kaley),” first-year Lady Eagles coach Anna Arnold said. “To come in here and finish third as a freshman — I know she didn’t shoot as well as she wanted to — but to finish that high, I’m really proud of her.”
Summertown, which shot 64-over 354 for the tournament, finished 12 strokes behind second-place Northview Academy. Signal Mountain coasted to the title by a 37-stroke margin.
Cheatham County shot 79-over 367 for the tournament — good enough for fifth place – while Clay County finished seventh at 118-over 406.
In boys action Alcoa’s Gabriel Hunter ran away from the field by shooting 10-under 134 — three strokes shy of the state record. Hunter also helped lead the Tornadoes to their first team championship since 2013.
“All the hard work that I’ve put into this sport, I knew it was just a matter of time before it paid off,” said Hunter, a junior. “This is our second (team) state title, and I know Coach (Rob Daugherty) really wanted this one, so it’s really, really cool to get this one for coach.”
Alcoa coasted to a 32-stroke win over second-place Signal Mountain, shooting 23-over 599 for the tournament. Houston County (+84) was fourth.
Houston County’s Morgan Robinson was the top individual finisher from Middle Tennessee, shooting even 72 on Wednesday to finish at 1-over 145 for the tournament.
