CAK makes a splash, win boys state golf championship

Hank Fennell knew how he'd celebrate. CAK won the boys Division II-A State Golf Championship and the coach jumped in the pond.

CAK coach Hank Fennell walks out of the pond after jumping in it to celebrate his CAK winning the Division II-A boys golf state title.

When the Warriors won the title in 2010, the whole team jumped in the pond. In 2015, Fennell found himself in the pond alone. He wanted everyone to jump in on Tuesday, but he was solo again.

"I feel like everyone should jump in," he said. "But it's kind of just the running thing. It's kind of the tradition."

CAK finished at 31-over par and won by a two-stroke differential over St. George's, with a 31-stroke gap before the third-place finishers Clarksville Academy and University School of Nashville.

"It was pretty much tie going into the last hole," Fennell said. "We did better than they did on the last hole."

Cade Russell finished fourth at one-over to lead CAK. Jackson Hughley was seventh at nine-over. Mitchell Deeson tied for eighth at 10-over. John Meadows tied for 10th at 11-over. Aaron Frazer was 13th at 13-over.

Webb finished fifth out of the six teams at 74-over par.

Grace Christian's Avery Alexander finished 25th as an individual with a score of 23-over.

In the girls' tournament, Knoxville Grace finished sixth with a score of 86-over, behind winner Franklin Road Academy's 13-over.
