Stewarts Creek's Shelden Barina sinks a putt during the District 7 Large Division tournament this season.

New Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association golf rules took their toll on area golfers, as local boys were shut out of the state tournament.

In an effort to trim the number of state participants in a new Large Class, only the top team and top three remaining individuals advanced to the state in 2017.

It was still a good year for several area boys golfers, including Golfer of the Year finalists Shelden Barina (Stewarts Creek), Garrett Chumley (Oakland) and Will Lalance (Siegel).

Barina, a UT-Martin signee, was consistently atop District 7 all season and was district champ with a 72 before shooting a 74 in the Region 4 tournament. The region score was a stroke off the pace to reach state for the fourth consecutive season.

Chumley, a freshman, led the Patriots with a 76.3 average. He fired an 80 in the district and a team-low 77 in the region tournament.

Lalance averaged 80.2 and got hot at tournament time, firing a 77 in the district tournament and a team-low 73 at the region, falling in the second hole of a playoff to determine the last state tournament berth.

The DNJ All-Area Boys Golfer of the Year will be announced at a ceremony near the end of the school year.
