Murfreesboro area athletes named to TSWA all-state teams

Siegel's Janie Hopper (26) was recently named to the TSWA Class AAA All-State Soccer Team.

Several area athletes recently were honored by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association on all-state teams.

Siegel's Janie Hopper and Central Magnet's Lauren Sanchez were named to the TSWA All-State Soccer Team.

Hopper, a senior forward, was named to the Class AAA team. The 7-AAA Offensive Player of the Year scored 20 goals with 14 assists and finished her career with 68 goals to become Siegel's all-time leading scorer. She helped lead the Lady Stars to the state tournament.

Sanchez, a senior defender, was named to the Class AA team.

Siegel sophomore standout Sophia Bossong was named to the TSWA All-State Volleyball Team.

Bossong was named a setter on the Class AAA team. Bossong, one of the nation's top sophomores, helped lead Siegel to a Class AAA state tournament berth with 1,416 assists, 110 kills and 55 aces.

Central Magnet senior Camille Smith was named to the TSWA All-State Cross Country Team.

Smith, a member of the Division I Large Class, finished fourth in the state meet in November.

Middle Tennessee Christian sophomore running back Kemari McGowan was named to the TSWA All-State DII-A football team as an athlete.

The Mr. Football semifinalist rushed for 2,094 yards and 25 touchdowns and added 20 2-point conversions.

Eagleville's Ethan Cobb and Graham Hatcher were named to the TSWA All-State 2A team.

Cobb, a junior quarterback and Mr. Football semifinalist, was 128-of-183 for 1,609 yards and 15 TDs while rushing for 771 yards and 16 more TDs.

Hatcher, a senior wide receiver, caught 48 passes for 598 yards and seven touchdowns.

Area teams win holiday tournaments

The Stewarts Creek High girls basketball team recently won the Overton Christmas Tournament.

Area basketball teams finished 2017 with holiday tournament championships.

Blackman's boys remained unbeaten (15-0) with a 75-45 win over Cane Ridge in the final of the Above the Rim Tournament. Trent Gibson was named MVP of the tournament, while Brandon Thomas and Nathan Nelson were named All-Tournament.

Stewarts Creek's girls improved to 13-1 by winning the Overton Christmas Tournament. The Lady Red Hawks defeated Rossview 56-40 in the title game thanks to 20 points from Lauren Flowers, 14 from Morgan McCrary and 13 from Kyra Wilder.

Riverdale's boys improved to 14-1 with a Willie Brown 65 Tournament championship at Father Ryan. The Warriors defeated the hosts 47-42 in the title contest.

Blackman's girls improved to 10-5 with three wins in the Ball N Preps Classic in Alabaster, Ala. The Lady Blaze defeated Huffman (Ala.) 57-44 in the finale behind 13 points from Nia Vanzant.
