8 burning questions for Clarksville basketball, wrestling

The next couple of weeks will go a long way in determining which high school basketball teams are in the best position for a district championship.

Meanwhile, the wrestling dual postseason begins next week as teams start their push for a spot in the state dual tournament in Franklin.

Here are eight burning questions as we head down the stretch run.

1. Just how intense will the Rossview-Northeast game be on Friday?

The Hawks already expressed just how much they are looking forward to Friday's huge District 10-AAA showdown against the district undefeated Eagles (8-0). The Eagles will have to respond on the floor – Rossview's floor, assuming weather improves this week.

2. How is CHS girls coach Brian Rush keeping his team afloat?

Is anyone else doing a better coaching job this season? Justin Woods had to replace a lot of key starters from last year, and his Rossview team continues to be legit. Rush has lost three key players to season-ending injuries (Ellie Treanton, Taylor Adkins and Courtney Jankowski), but his team is 12-6 overall and tied for first in the district with Rossview and Henry County – all with 8-1 records – and doing it after six contributors from last year's team graduated.

3. Speaking of Rossview, how hungry is Woods' team?

Henry County upset the Lady Hawks in last year's district tournament final and had to watch as CHS captured the region crown. With the majority of the team back this year, Rossview has had few hiccups with a 16-3 record and seems to be playing with a chip on its shoulder.

4. Can anyone beat Rossview's wrestling trio?

Rossview's boys team has had an outstanding dual season, but this question is posed for the girls' side. The Lady Hawks have three undefeated wrestlers: Robbin Yunis (125 pounds), Emma Walker (132) and Brielle Bissonette. They are a combined 57-0.

5. Have the Clarksville Academy girls had a better one-two punch?

Clarksville Academy's Sydneey Boykin

Our guess? No. With Keisha Phillips and the recently returned Sydneey Boykin, Clarksville Academy's girls haven't had this much success in a two-year period maybe ever. They had 17 wins last year and are at 10 this season.

6. Can the West Creek boys be a dark horse come tournament time?

The Coyotes struggled to start the season, losing their first six games, but they have won six of their past seven, proving its not how you start but how you finish. They still must face Rossview and Northeast before the regular season ends, but they might not be a team you want to see come tournament time.

7. Has MCHS' move to 3A been smooth?

Montgomery Central coach Jimmy Young might have liked his old classification (2A), but the Indians have played well in their first season in 3A ball with city teams. Central is 3-5 in District 10, tied for fifth place with Clarksville High.

8. So who is the best boys player in District 10?

There's a lot of candidates and each coach will name his own player. Rossview can pick from Austin Jackson, Will Midlick or Max Leinweber. Clarksville has Devyn Bender. Kenwood has James Williams. But right now, the answer would simply be Northeast's Alec Kegler.
