The Hampton boys’ basketball team had just enough firepower on Monday night.

The Bulldogs outlasted University High for a 75-69 victory in the District 1-A Boys’ consolation game at Daniel Boone High School. With the win, Hampton claimed the No. 3 seed for the Region 1-A tournament, and will travel to either Cosby or Greenback on Saturday for the quarterfinals.

In the first quarter, Gavin Hardin and Jordan Bentley pushed the Bulldogs to an early 4-2 lead. The teams traded points as Dru Owens and Jonah Jones hit shots for Hampton, but UH held an 18-17 lead going into the second half.

During the quarter break as well as during a stoppage of play early in the second after a couple of shots, the score became a focal point as officials worked to determine what the accurate score was with the official book. The result was resetting the score at 21-20 with the Bulldogs in the lead two minutes into the second.

Bentley and the Bulldogs went on a 9-0 run that was capped by shots from Hunter Davenport, Matt Oaks, and Owens. UH trimmed the lead to one, but Hampton extended it to 36-30 at the end of the third.

Hampton took control in the third.

HHS pushed the lead to 10 points early in the period and maintained a nine-point lead going into the fourth. The Bucs were able to make one last run at Hampton as they closed within four points during the final minutes. Hampton, however, took care of business at the free throw line to secure the win.

Owens led Hampton with 25 points, while Bentley had 14 points. Davenport added 11 points. Jayden Livingston tossed in eight points for the Bulldogs.
