14 Jackson area players selected for BCAT/TACA All-Star Basketball Games

West Tennessee fans have one more chance to see some of the best players in the area on the basketball court.

On Saturday, the Basketball Coaches Association of Tennessee/Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association will hold its basketball all-star games at Riverdale.

West Tennessee is well represented in both games with 14 participants.

There are eight girls on the West Team from rural West Tennessee headlined by Haywood's Jamirah Shutes, a University of Memphis signee, and University School of Jackson's Ashton Hulme, the 2018 Division II-A Miss Basketball winner and Bethel University signee.

The other player from the area that has committed to a college is Trinity Christian Academy's Savannah Lee, who has committed to Montevallo.

Other team members from the area are: Laquita Callaway (Haywood), Sequoya Warren (Middleton), Tia Bland (Covington), Amaria Pugh (Dyer County) and Tori Daniels (Dyer County).

There are six boys on the West Team from rural West Tennessee led by Middleton's Tylandrius Parks, a Union commit, Riverside's Daryl McElrath and South Side's Bryce McBride.

Other team members from the area are: Cameron Luten (Peabody), Rico Quentin (Dyer County) and Tre Austin (Ripley).

Greenfield's Willie Trevathan will join up with Arlington's Wes Shappley to coach the West Girls.

The West Boys will be coached by Arlington's Don Deaton and White Station's Jesus Patino.

The pre-game luncheon is at noon. The girls game is slated to start at 3 p.m. with the boys game to follow at 5 p.m.

There is a 3-point shooting contest prior to the girls game and a dunk contest prior to the boys game.

Lexington wins Sarah Beth Whitehead: For the second straight season, the Lexington softball team was named champions of the Sarah Beth Whitehead Tournament.

This year, the tournament was moved from the West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex to Lexington.

The championship was a battle of two undefeated teams, but Lexington (8-0) got the better of South Side (8-1) 2-0.

The Lady Tigers beat Tipton-Rosemark, Bolivar, South Gibson, West Carroll, Jackson Christian and Milan on the way to the championship game.

Chester grad Baylee Smith honored as POW: Last week, Memphis' Baylee Smith, a Chester County graduate, was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week in softball.

Smith finished the week going 12-for-17 at the plate with nine RBI, a pair of doubles and four stolen bases to lead Memphis with a .706 batting average. 

She finished the week with five runs scored, a pair of walks and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. She also recorded three hits in three of the five games on the week.

Riverside's McElrath gets offer from Union: Riverside senior Daryl McElrath added another offer on the NCAA Division II level from Union University.

McElrath had an offer from Delta State along with some JUCO offers.

This past season, McElrath averaged 25.3 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.7 assists for the Panthers.
