David Carter coached St. George's to a state championship in 2015.

After five seasons and two trips to the state championship game, St. George's and football coach David Carter have mutually decided to part ways.

"We appreciate coach Carter's contributions to our school," Gryphons athletic director Tommy Densford said in a statement. "(He) has made a positive impact on many of our graduates and current students and we are grateful."

Carter posted a 43-20 record during his tenure and capped a 13-1 season in 2015 with a 50-20 victory over Northpoint in the Division II-A championship game. The Gryphons finished runner-up in 2013, which was Carter's first season after succeeding Brent Hill.

Following the graduation of several key players — most notably two-time Mr. Football winner Chase Hayden — the Gryphons stumbled to a 4-7 finish in 2017, their worst season since 2008.

Carter was also one of the head coaches in last year's AutoZone Liberty Bowl high school all-star game.
