The Sweetwater Wildcats baseball team opened a critical district series with the Loudon Redskins on Monday evening. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Loudon, but due to field conditions, it was moved to Sweetwater. A brilliant pitching performance by the Redskins’ staff combined with a poor defensive outing by the Wildcats gave a huge district win to Loudon.
Keegan Knox took the mound for the Wildcats. Although the Redskins were able to get more hits than Knox usually allows, it was the six errors committed by the Wildcats that were really their undoing. Loudon jumped on the board with three runs in the second inning. Two innings later, the team in red pushed across another three runs for a commanding 6-0 lead.
The Redskins continued to build their lead with two runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh. The Wildcats trailed 10-0 when they came to bat in their last frame. Luke Mashburn led off the seventh with a single to right field. He would later score on a single by Levi Presley. The second run of the inning was driven in by Skylar Huffstetler. After Luke Gross drove in the third run of the inning, it looked like the Wildcats might be in position to make some real noise. The bases were loaded with some big hitters coming to the plate. However, there were two outs and the Wildcats could were unable to score again. The final score was Loudon 10, Sweetwater 3.
The Loudon pitching staff combined to strikeout 13 Sweetwater hitters. The rematch was scheduled to take place at Loudon on Tuesday evening.
Sweetwater will host Northview Academy on Thursday and Notre Dame on Friday.
