One of the state’s top football recruits will have a new home in 2018. Whether he’ll be playing football there remains to be seen, though.

Kendrell Scurry, a four-star wide receiver and the state’s 16th-ranked prospect (No. 328 nationally) according to 247Sports composite rankings, has left Independence and enrolled at Maplewood, Panthers coach Arcentae Broome told The Tennessean on Tuesday.

“He’s here,” Broome said. “I talked to him for a little bit this morning. He said he didn’t have a real good season last year, and I (asked him), ‘Well, what’s your take on football?’ He said, ‘I don’t know, Coach.’ So right now, he’s just a student.”

Scurry, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound rising senior, has received scholarship offers from more than a dozen FBS programs. He recently announced his top five schools to be Mississippi State, Louisville, Virginia, Kentucky and Miami.

In two seasons at Independence, Scurry hauled in 96 receptions for 1,502 yards and 19 touchdowns.

As a sophomore, the 2016 Tennessean All-Midstate second-team selection made 58 grabs for 977 yards and 16 touchdowns, helping lead the 14-1 Eagles to a Class 5A runner-up finish. Although his production dipped last season, Scurry still managed to make 38 catches for 525 yards and three touchdowns.
