Hendersonville has named Kari Akin, left, its next softball coach. She stands besides her father Steve "Chick" Crandell.

Kari Akin is now in charge of the program she was once played for.

Akin, an alumna of Hendersonville High School, has been named the head softball coach at her alma mater, principal Bob Cotter announced Friday.

"I'm very excited about being able to take over the program that gave me so much," Akin said. "One of the I remember most (from my playing days) is the community and the unity, and how it was a sisterhood to play together. We had such a great culture and community about the team, and that's something I want to bring back."

Akin graduated from Hendersonville in 2000, playing on a team that twice made the state tournament.

"I think a lot of (culture-building) is working to build each other up and working together as a team," Akin said, "and teaching these young ladies how to be leaders — not just on the field, but off the field and in their community."

She played collegiately at Ohio State and Middle Tennessee, eventually becoming the coach at Ravenwood High School in 2008. There, she led the program to four straight district and region titles and a state tournament appearance in 2010.

Akin is the daughter of Steve "Chick" Crandell, a long-time assistant coach.

"I grew up in this program," Akin said, "and I want to build us back up to where we once were."

Akin stepped down after the 2012 season to spend more time with her family. She was an assistant for the Hendersonville program this season.

"I am thrilled to bring a Commando back to lead our program," Cotter said. "Kari understands the traditions and expectations associated with being a head coach here."
