In the history of Fairview High School, no boys soccer team has ever competed in the State tournament - - that is, until today when the Yellow Jackets travel I-840 east to play in the 2018 Spring Fling.

Fairview Head Coach Shane Smith is beyond is excited to see the Jackets reach a new pinnacle of success. “I am very proud,” said Smith after Monday night’s big sectional win.

“The sectional game could not have been any more dramatic,” described Coach Smith.  After defeating Murfreesboro Central on Thursday night, the Jackets were pitted against Martin Luther King on Sunday evening at 7 p.m.

The first 80-minutes were played as scheduled on Sunday evening. The teams each reached the net for one goal, resulting in a 1-1 draw. Fairview’ Brandon Parrish found the net after a solid pass from Jeffrey Perez.

Threat of a lightning strike led to a weather delay, and officials eventually suspended the game until Monday afternoon.  “We had to return on Monday to play the two 10-minute overtime periods,” stated Coach Smith, who was not deterred by the weather delay and felt optimistic about his players’ ability to outscore their opponent.

On Monday afternoon, the game-winning goal in overtime occurred in the first 90 seconds, when Jeffrey Perez won the ball and dumped it off to Brandon Parrish.

Parrish made a nice pass to Tanner Peterson on the outside, and Peterson who took a one-touch, left foot shot hitting the far post before ricocheting into the goal.

The Jackets are now headed to the State Tournament for a quarterfinal match up with Sheffield High School today at 6:30 p.m.
