The Yellow Jackets got back in the win column with two victories in their last four games. Grundy outdueled Whitwell 4-2 last Friday and earned its first district win of the season with a 10-6 defeat of Community on Tuesday.
GCHS (3-12) began its recent four-game stretch with an 18-4 loss to Forrest last Tuesday in Coalmont. The teams were tied 3-3 after four innings, but the visiting Rockets exploded for six runs in the fifth and another 10 in the sixth to hand the Jackets the 14-run loss. Grundy committed a whopping 10 errors in the contest.
Colton Rogers singled home Will Foster in the second to put GCHS on the board. Jarod Huntley roped a double to center to plate Gavin Knight an inning later, and an RBI groundout by Foster in the third gave the Jackets a brief 3-2 advantage, but the Jackets’ chances disappeared in the fifth inning.
Four Forrest hits and four Grundy errors put the Yellow Jackets behind 8-4, and five more hits and four more errors in the sixth led to the 18-4 final.
Despite the disappointing defeat, GCHS rebounded with a 4-2 win over Whitwell last Friday in Coalmont. Jaxon Woodlee scattered five hits and limited the Tigers to just two runs in 4.2 innings of work, and Knight played the role of closer with no hits through the final 2.1 innings with three K’s.
Knight also provided run support with a couple of RBIs. The starting second baseman put Grundy up 3-2 in the fourth with two runs driven in, and he scored the Jackets fourth run of the game later in the inning.
Foster and Huntley provided the other two GCHS runs with a sacrifice fly and RBI single, respectively.
Grundy reached into its substitution list and utilized its bullpen the following day for a Saturday matchup with Franklin County at GCHS. The Rebels routed the Jackets 13-3 in the non-district contest, but the game gave Coach Brad Dees the opportunity to get playing time for many on the roster.
Grundy threw four pitchers and sent 11 batters to the plate against the 4A power. Huntley, Woodlee, Jamie Nunley and Peyton McGee accounted for the four GCHS hits, and Gauge Marcom gave up just one hit in 2.1 innings of relief work on the mound.
Two days later, a rested Huntley struck out 12 Community batters and Knight slammed the door on a 10-6 win over the Vikings with one hit in 2.1 innings of relief. As a team, Grundy out-hit CHS 9-6 to claim its first district victory of 2023.
The Jackets jumped on the Vikings early in the first and second innings. GCHS took a 3-0 lead with Foster driving in one on an error and Woodlee singling home two more in the first. Grundy extended its advantage to 6-0 the next frame on an RBI single from Huntley and a two-run error off the bat of McGee.
The Vikings threatened with two runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth, but the Grundy County offense proved to be too much for Community’s defense to handle. CHS starting pitcher Blaine Paschal turned in an impressive six-inning outing, striking out 12 while allowing just seven hits, but six wild pitches and five errors against the defense cost him in the end. The collection of miscues led to six unearned runs.
For Grundy, Rogers scored on a wild pitch in the third and a Knight double in the fifth, and Huntley came home on an error in the fourth. Foster added the final run in the sixth when he scored from third, courtesy of a wild pitch.
The Yellow Jackets hosted Cascade on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. GCHS visits Franklin County on Friday at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Forrest at 5 p.m. on Monday and Sequatchie on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
