More than two months after the resignation of Ty Wilson, Maplewood promoted assistant coach Jaleel Queary to head boys basketball coach.

Queary graduated from Maplewood in 2011 and was in his second stint as an assistant coach, also serving from 2015-18. He takes over for Wilson, who spent the past 17 seasons guiding the Panthers. Wilson led the Panthers to two state tournament appearances, reaching the state semifinals in 2010 and capturing the 2017 Class AA state championship with Queary on staff.

“Being selected as Maplewood's coach is truly a dream come true," Queary said. "I count it an honor and privilege to be entrusted with the progression of this program in a community of established coaches, mentors, and educators that contributed so significantly to my success both on and off the court."

Maplewood High School has named Jaleel Queary as its new boys basketball coach Tuesday, June 13, 2023. Queary replaces longtime coach Ty WIlson.

While Queary was on Wilson's staff he helped develop two-time Class 2A Mr. Basketball winner Bo Hodges. After the 2018 season, Queary moved to Illinois and spent two seasons as the freshman coach at Metea Valley High School and won the 2020 City of Aurora Championship before returning to Maplewood in 2021.

“Coach Queary is the right person to lead the Maplewood basketball team," Wilson said. "Having played at Maplewood as well as being an assistant here, he understands the history of the program. He has a great rapport with the kids."

Wilson won over 330 games in his coaching tenure at Maplewood. The Panthers were 12-10 this past season

"Coach Wilson has done an excellent job with serving as the head boys basketball coach, and to pass the baton to Mr. Jaleel Queary, a former Maplewood student-athlete, speaks volumes,” said Maplewood principal, Dr. Sonya Brooks. “He brings a wealth of knowledge about the game and an understanding of how to tap into the potential of the players. He will truly be an asset as he continues to build the program and help our student athletes maximize their potential.”
