Grundy football fans have the chance to see the Yellow Jackets in preseason action at home this week. GCHS wraps up its summer camp schedule Friday with a scrimmage against Red Boiling Springs at Crisp Field. Kickoff against the Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m.
“We’re going to try to run it as closely to a real game as possible,” head coach Nick Bryant said. “It’ll really help us get a good gauge of where we’re at before the jamboree next week.”
Grundy visited Sewanee’s Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium last Friday in a three-team scrimmage against Trousdale County and Whitwell. The contest featured both live plays and situational sets, and Bryant said he was happy with how the team fared against the Yellow Jackets and Tigers.
“We played really well against two very good ball teams,” Bryant said. “We looked good, hustled and won the turnover battle. We want to do that every game.
“I thought Blake Atha and Kegan Kilgore had a lot of good plays on the line, and Kyler Hopkins and Will Foster really stood out on offense. On defense, Tommy Byers played well, Hopkins had an interception, and freshman Remi Rogers had an interception in a varsity set.”
This week, Bryant said the team’s focus was on being more aggressive. He said he hopes it shows Friday when the Jackets suit up in front of their home fans for the first time this season.
“We need to stay on our blocks and work on fixing the things we mess up on,” Bryant said. “We have to cut down on simple mistakes, lock on our blocks and drive, and we have to hit our passes on offense.”
Grundy returns to the gridiron Friday, Aug. 11 for the annual Sequatchie Valley Jamboree. Jamboree kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Sequatchie County High School in Dunlap, and the Jackets are scheduled to play the third and fourth quarters. GCHS will square off against Rhea County and Howard High School.
