Hampton coach Michael Lunsford was just waiting for his Bulldog football team to start bearing its teeth and quit playing around quietly in the pound.
He got his wish on Friday night when the ‘Dogs went wild and broke their chains in convincing fashion over conference foe Cumberland Gap to the tune of a 69-28 win.
The Bulldogs built a 37-7 lead in the first quarter alone and cruised their way to the win from there.
It was a total team effort as the ‘Dogs had several standout efforts in the contest.
Dominique Burleson led the ground game for Hampton as the junior racked up 116 yards on only four touches while scoring two touchdowns for the ‘Dogs. Thrown in for good measure was an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as well.
Peyton Townsend also broke the century mark in rushing as he carried four times for 112 yards and two scores, while Geno Carrico added three rushes for 62 yards and a Bulldog score.
Senior quarterback Dylan Trivett accounted for three scores as he completed 6-of-9 passes good enough for 123 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, Trivett added a pair of scores as he had two carries for 24 yards.
On the receiving end, J.J. McElyea caught three of Trivett’s tosses covering 68 yards and a touchdown. He also added another score on a defensive pick six.
Elijah McKinney hauled in a pair of passes for 46 yards receiving and added a special team score when he took a kickoff for another touchdown.
Defensively, Shayden Oliver had a huge night as he made 13 tackles with four of those resulting in losses.
The Bulldogs have little time to rest as they have to get ready to take on Cloudland on Friday evening.
