“Two former standouts on the links for the Cyclones will be shedding the black and orange and donning blue and white come the fall of 2024. Maylie Stout and Ashlynn Guy both made it official this week, putting ink to paper and letting their intentions be known publicly. Both girls were former All-Region and All-Conference players, as well as outstanding students. Girls’ Golf Coach Kenneth Hardin acknowledged both of them for their hard work and spoke about how well they represented the Cyclones on the golf course. ‘Both girls are very focused kids that have worked hard to get to this point. They are getting the opportunity to continue their golf dreams and, most importantly, get an education. I’m excited for them that they will get this opportunity together,’ Hardin said.
When interviewed, they both spoke about why they chose Tennessee Wesleyan. ‘When looking for a school, we both were looking for something that just felt like home. Tennessee Wesleyan is in a small town and has an Elizabethton feel to it with just a great atmosphere,’ Guy shared. ‘For me, it was a place where I could just roll over and get a master’s degree in education,’ Stout added. They both love the sport and are excited to play at the next level. ‘Golf has changed me as a person,’ Stout said. For Guy, she just fell in love with a sport that was so mentally challenging. ‘It’s a challenging sport; it gives you a chance to come back from your own mistakes,’ Guy shared. ‘For me, I love the game because it forces you to rely on yourself. It’s a team sport, but it really comes back on you if you are going to excel,’ Stout contributed.
The chance to play together also weighed heavily on the decision. ‘I’m so excited; we are really good friends. My freshmen year, I really didn’t have anyone. I felt like a lost puppy but, Mayley came along and we created just a bond,’ Guy said. ‘If it wasn’t for Ashlyn, I would not be here today. She was accepting. If not for her and her willingness to make me feel like part of the team, I would not have fallen in love with this game. College can be scary, so having someone who cares for you means a lot,’ Stout explained.
Both girls stated their time as Cyclones has meant a great deal. ‘Just to know you have that support in all aspects means everything. Our signing and having that many people come out just tell you a lot about what being a Cyclone means,’ Guy stated. ‘No matter what you do – golf, football, volleyball, or even if you don’t play a sport, just having that support, the community this town is built on is just crazy to see sometimes,’ Stout exclaimed.”
