Grundy County’s girls’ basketball team split its most recent set of contests. The Lady Jackets (3-2) bested Marion County 76-45 in their home opener at Ricky Richards Gym last Tuesday before dropping a 51-33 decision at Sequatchie County on Friday.
Sophomore Gracie Panter paced GCHS with 21 points in the win over Marion. Panter knocked down a 3-pointer to begin the game and the Lady Jackets never looked back. Grundy netted nine points before MCHS got on the board. The Lady Jackets led 35-14 at the half and 55-31 after three quarters.
Carlee Smartt finished with 16 points. The senior scored 10 in the fourth quarter, including going 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Freshman Kallie Parson totaled 15 points.
The GCHS defense limited Marion to just four points in the second period. The Warriors’ Milan Pemberton led MCHS with 10 points and Laney Bradford followed closely behind with nine. Bradford recorded all of her points from beyond the arc.
The Lady Jackets fell to Sequatchie County in their following game in Dunlap. Despite back-and-forth scoring in the early goings, the Indians pulled away at the half. Sequatchie’s Kirklyn Stockwell hit a pair of 3-pointers and Curtlyn Lee added a third before the midway buzzer to extend the SCHS lead to 30-8.
Grundy County played at Bledsoe County on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. The Jackets return to Ricky Richards Gym on Friday to host Sequatchie County at 6 p.m. They then visit Whitwell on Monday and Marion on Tuesday. Tip for both away games is set for 6 p.m.
