Grundy County High School junior Sam Parson was presented a 1,000-point basketball by head coach Kevin Butner, left, and assistant coach Joey Favaloro prior to the Jackets’ game against Marion last Friday. Parson scored his 1,000th career point Nov. 20 at Franklin County.Â
Grundy County handed both Marion County and Sequatchie County losses Tuesday and Friday, respectively. The Yellow Jackets (6-0) walloped Marion 90-61 in their home opener before taking care of Sequatchie 61-34 on the road.
Sam Parson continued his tear of opposing teams in Tuesday’s 29-point victory over the Warriors. After being recognized pregame for scoring his 1,000th career point, the junior went out and netted 34 points.Â
Marion’s defense held Grundy to less than 20 points in only one period, but the Yellow Jackets still managed 15 points in the third quarter. GCHS is currently ranked inside the top 20 in the state for offense with 75 points per game.
Nate Roberts tacked on 19 points, and both Dylan Sanders and Reece Strong pitched in eight.Â
The Warriors leading scorer was Tilton Pickett with 22 points. Sam Pickett accounted for 14 points.
The Yellow Jackets followed up their win over MCHS with a road victory over Sequatchie County. Parson and Sanders each tallied 14 points in a balanced attack, and Roberts threw in nine.
GCHS trailed 11-8 after the first quarter, but the Jackets caught fire in the second to take control. Their 22 points led to a 30-18 advantage at the half, and the defense held Sequatchie to just 16 points the entire second half. All but two of Sanders’ points came in the third and fourth periods as he led a 31-point charge to close out the game.
Two Indians finished with double digits. Ryker Terry earned 15 points and Beckham McKendrick finished with 12.
The Yellow Jackets are currently ranked third by Max Preps in its 2A power rankings. Both CoachT and PrepHoops have Grundy sitting at sixth in their 2A rankings.
Grundy County played at Bledsoe County on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. The Jackets return to Ricky Richards Gym on Friday to host Sequatchie County at 6 p.m. They then visit Whitwell on Monday and Marion on Tuesday. Tip for both away games is set for 6 p.m.
