The Huntland High School Hornets beat the Collinwood Trojans 74-59 at home Friday for their sixth win of the season.
The score was kept close throughout the first half, but the Hornets pulled away in the third quarter and never looked back as they moved their overall record for the season back to .500.
The Hornets jumped out to a 7-4 lead to start the contest, but the Trojans scored the next eight points to pull ahead for the rest of the period.
Trace Kilpatrick hit a layup at the buzzer to cut the deficit down to a single point as the Hornets trailed 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. Kilpatrick scored nine of Huntland’s 13 points in the opening period.
The lead changed hands five times in the second quarter before the Hornets ended the half with six straight points to secure a 32-27 advantage going into the halftime break. Lashawn Kimmons scored 10 of Huntland’s 19 points in the second quarter.
The Hornets opened the second half with a 16-3 run to boost their lead up to double digits for the rest of the day as they scored 30 total points in the period.
They led 62-43 going into the final period.
The Hornets remained in firm control throughout the fourth quarter as they went on to win by 15 points.
Kilpatrick led the Hornets with 19 points for the game, followed by Landon Farmer with 17 points and Kimmons with 14.
Caydon Bradford scored 10 points, Kannon Lafevers and Grant Jernigan scored five points each, and Demetri Reed and Ellis Stewart scored two points each.
With the win, the Hornets improved to 6-6 on the season.
They will next play Thursday at home against Community High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
