Grundy County finished off the Bledsoe County basketball series with a pair of wins last Friday at Ricky Richards Gym. The boys’ squad avenged its only loss with a 59-33 victory, and the girls won 94-28 to claim the season sweep of the Warriors.
The boys team fell 72-70 in overtime Dec. 5 in Pikeville, but the Yellow Jackets (11-1) made sure no extra minutes were needed in last Friday’s meeting in Coalmont. Junior Sam Parson netted 26 and fellow starter Brady Everett added eight in the 26-point victory over the Warriors.Â
The two teams traded points, nearly basket-for-basket, in the opening half. Parson scored nine, and both Garrick Easterly and Bryce Harwell each hit a pair of 3-pointers to help Grundy to a 28-21 advantage at halftime. Bledsoe’s Dallas Bridges led the Warriors with seven points at the break, and Jace Rains had six through two quarters.
The momentum swung in the Jackets favor in the second half as the home team outscored BCHS 14-8 in the third quarter. Parson nearly matched Bledsoe’s scoring for the period with seven of his own, and he didn’t let up in the fourth. The junior tacked on 10 more points in the final eight minutes while the GCHS defense limited the Warriors to just four points in the closing stanza. The blowout was the seventh victory by more than 25 points for Grundy this year.
The Lady Jackets (8-2) continued their tear of opposing teams with a 66-point walloping of the Warriors to extend their winning streak to five. Five scored in double figures, including Carlee Smartt and Gracie Panter. The two starters each totaled 16 points, while Elyce Rymer had 14, Kasadee Crabtree scored 11 and Kallie Parson finished with 10. GCHS had the game under control from the opening tip. Panter and Pason scored seven and six points, respectively, to assist the Lady Jackets in a 31-point first period. In the second, Panter and Rymer each scored five to see their team’s lead swell to 58-15 at the half.
Bledsoe managed to match its first-period scoring in the third with eight points, but it was held to a game-low five points in the fourth. Grundy, on the other hand, scored 15 and 21, respectively, to close out the last two quarters. Smartt scored 10 of her 16 points in the second half.
Both Grundy teams competed in Sale Creek High School’s Christmas tournament earlier this week. A recap of the tournament will appear in next week’s Herald. The two squads return to action Tuesday, Jan. 2 when they travel to McMinnville to take on Boyd Christian. The doubleheader is scheduled for 6 p.m.
