The Grundy County girls’ basketball team went 1-1 at the Sale Creek High School “Battle at the Creek” tournament last week. Head coach Brittany Woodlee’s Lady Jackets (9-3) downed Sequatchie County 53-45 before falling 59-51 against Rhea County.
Senior Carlee Smartt led GCHS to the eight-point win Dec. 18 with an 18-point performance against Sequatchie County. The victory extended Grundy’s winning streak to six games and improved the season’s series record against the Indians to 2-1.
Sequatchie County bested the Lady Jackets in only one quarter in the tournament’s opening matchup. Grundy was outscored 13-9 in the second period, but the rally was not enough to overcome the Jackets’ 10-point lead built from their 18-8 showing in the opening eight minutes. Smartt bucketed seven in the first quarter.
Leading 27-21 at the half, GCHS extended its advantage to 41-33 in the third, and Smartt added five points in the fourth to help put the game out of reach.
Freshman Kallie Parson pitched in nine points, and Kasadee Crabtree added eight points, including six points in the fourth.
The six-game winning streak stands as Grundy’s longest of the season, but the successful stretch came to an end Dec. 19 in an eight-point loss to Rhea County. Parson and sophomore Grace Panter scored 18 and 13 points, respectively, but the double-digit showings were not enough to lift the Lady Jackets over the Eagles.
Despite trailing by just two points after the first quarter, 15-13, Grundy’s deficit widened by the half as RCHS outdueled the Jackets 18-10 in the second.
Grundy pulled within five in the third period, 44-39. Smartt and Parson each tallied six points during the stanza, but Rhea County won the fourth quarter 14-12 to seal the victory for the Eagles. Rhea’s Lalyn Lockhart scored 20 in the contest, including 10 in the closing eight minutes.
The Lady Jackets open the new year Tuesday, Jan. 2 in McMinnville against F.C. Boyd Christian. Tipoff against the Broncos is scheduled for 6 p.m. They are set to square off against South Pittsburg at SPHS on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 6 p.m., and Grundy opens district play Friday, Jan. 5 at Forrest High School.
