The Yellow Jackets scored a 64-57 win over Signal Mountain on Dec. 18 as part of Sale Creek High School’s “Sale Creek Christmas Classic.”
GCHS (11-1) rallied back from a 13-point deficit at the half to overcome the 11th-ranked Eagles in its only game of the holiday tournament.
SMHS led 17-15 after the first quarter, but the Eagles’ lead swelled to 41-28 by halftime. Signal’s Andrew Matukewicz scored eight points in the second, and leading scorer Josh Thompson added seven to the 10 points he put up in the first quarter.
In the first half, Sam Parson and Brady Everett were held to just 15 combined points, but the Yellow Jackets stormed back in the third to pull within six. Parson and Dylan Sanders tallied 10 and six points, respectively, to help close the gap.
After scoring 18 points in the third, GCHS repeated its 18-point quarter in the fourth to claim the win. Everett bucketed eight points in the fourth to lead the period’s scorers and bring his game total to 16. Meanwhile, the Grundy defense limited Signal Mountain to just five points in the final eight minutes. Thompson, who led the Eagles with 19 points for the game, didn’t record a point in the fourth.
Parson finished with a team-best 19 points for the Yellow Jackets, and Everett’s 16 ranked second. Sanders ended the night with 12 points to round out Grundy’s double-digit scorers.
The Jackets open the new year Tuesday, Jan. 2 in McMinnville against F.C. Boyd Christian. Tipoff against the Broncos is scheduled for 6 p.m. They are set to square off against South Pittsburg at SPHS on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 6 p.m., and Grundy opens district play Friday, Jan. 5 at Forrest High School.
