Patriots stumble in loss at Kenwood

Dropping a 48-40 decision on Jan. 5 to Kenwood in Clarksville wasn’t the way the Henry County High School boys’ basketball team wanted to begin District 14-4A play.

The Patriots were coming off a 56-37 victory over Stewart County on Jan. 2 at Gamlin Gymnasium and felt good going into the district opener at Kenwood but couldn’t find enough points to pull out the win.

Henry County slipped to 8-6 with the loss and 0-1 in district play. The Patriots played at McKenzie on Tuesday and will return to district play on Friday at West Creek in Clarksville. Girls’ varsity action tips off at 6 p.m. Friday with the boys’ varsity contest to follow.

The Patriots have two more district games next week. On Jan. 16, Henry County travels to Dickson County before playing host to Clarksville Northwest on Jan. 19. 

KNIGHTS 48, PATRIOTS 40

Patriot senior forward Caden Marshall erupted to score 24 points at Kenwood but the other Patriots struggled to score.

Kenwood took an 11-9 first-quarter lead as Jason Russell hit two 3-pointers for the Knights. Marshall began his big night with seven points in the opening frame for the Patriots.

Henry County posted an 11-8 scoring edge in the second period to grab a 20-19 halftime lead. Marshall hit two 3-point shots while scoring 11 points in the second stanza for the Patriots. Kenwood’s Keyondre Moving hit for four points.

The Knights regained the momentum by going on a 13-5 scoring run in the third quarter. That propelled Kenwood into a 32-25 lead. Both Jacoby Cox and Camron Dowell had five points for Kenwood in the third period. Kayden Kendall topped Henry County with three points.

Kenwood shot down Henry County’s rally attempts in the fourth period. The Knights managed a 16-15 scoring edge to finish with the 48-40 victory. Dowell put in six points for the Knights in the fourth period. Henry County got four points each from Marshall and Javion Boyd.

Only four Patriots scored points in the game. Following Marshall’s 24-point outburst, the Patriots got seven points from Daveon Barker while Kendall checked in with five. Boyd finished with four points.

Kenwood got 11 points each from Dowell and Russell. Moving contributed nine points with Cox scoring eight and Zy Hinton adding seven. Christian Taylor scored two points.

PATRIOTS 56, REBELS 37

Stewart County rallied into a 13-13 tie at the end of the first quarter by going on a 5-1 scoring run. The Rebels got six points from Jacob Morgan and five from Hayden Wallace. Boyd hit two 3-point shots while scoring eight points for the Patriots.

Henry County gained control of the game with a 16-9 scoring run in the second frame. Barker led the way with five points as the Patriots grabbed a 29-22 halftime lead. Wallace scored four points for the Rebels in the second period.

A 14-6 scoring dash in the third quarter boosted Henry County’s lead to 43-28. Marshall tossed in six points in the third period for Henry County while Stewart County got two points each from Hayden Wallace, Morgan and Jonathan Walsh.

The Patriots finished off the win with a 13-9 scoring edge in the fourth quarter that made the final score 56-37. Marshall put in seven points for Henry County in the fourth quarter. Hayden Wallace had five points for Stewart County.

Marshall topped Henry County’s scoring list with 16 points while Boyd checked in with 11. Kendrick Moore contributed nine points with Barker adding eight. Kendall scored five points with Jamari Foster hitting one 3-point shot. Both Carson Curd and Drew Pack scored two points.

Stewart County’s leading scorer was Hayden Wallace with 16 points. Morgan added 12 points with Kyrick Wallace scoring four points. Walsh chipped in three points and Benn Hendricks scored two points.
